The Canterbury GirlBoss Awards are back for their third year, and Enable is proud to once again sponsor the Innovation category, marking our third year supporting this incredible initiative.
At Enable, we’re committed to championing diversity and inclusion in the workplace. Partnering with the GirlBoss Awards is a powerful way to express that commitment, by uplifting the ambitions of young women in innovation and entrepreneurship.
We caught up with Enable’s Chief Commercial Officer, Donna Frew, who returned this year as a judge for the Innovation category. Donna shared her insights on the judging experience, the inspiring nominees, and her reflections as both a business leader and a mum to an 18-year-old daughter.
"Young women today are great at taking advantage of the broad scope of opportunities available to them, and they're being encouraged to view their futures through a lens of impact - especially in STEM fields."
Donna is passionate about her role as a judge, and it shows.
“I love reading all the submissions. I’m continually impressed by the diversity of thought,” she shared. “What stands out most is the strong sense of social responsibility. These young women aren’t just solving problems; they’re committed to making a difference in their communities.”
The Innovation category showcases nominees who embody visionary thinking and impactful execution. Donna described the experience as deeply moving.
“It’s inspiring to hear their stories. Across all categories, we see young women turning adversity into a powerful force for change.
When asked what she hopes the winner of the Innovation category will go on to achieve, Donna said:
“I hope they maintain their passion, not just for their current project, but for future innovations that can create positive change. I’d encourage them to bring others along on the journey, share their passion, and never give up.”
We also asked Donna what she hopes these awards provide for young women:
“A platform. A chance to showcase what they’re working on and to inspire the next generation to believe that anything is possible.”
And her advice for those considering entering next year?
“Easy. Don’t underestimate yourself! That applies to life in general. If you have an idea, lean into it and start. Then find mentors and partners who can help you grow it. Expand your thinking, refine your approach, and scale your impact.”
The Canterbury GirlBoss Awards ceremony was held last week at the Christchurch Town Hall. Enable extends a huge congratulations to all the winners and nominees across every category.
Special congrats to the winner of the Innovation category, Elissa Harley, founder and CEO of Enivo Pots (www.enivo.co.nz), Elisa launched Envivo Pots at 16 through the GirlBoss Edge: Primary Industries programme. Enivo produces biodegradable plant pots made from local forestry and primary industry residues, offering a scalable, cost-effective alternative to the 350 million plastic pots used annually in Aotearoa.
She built local supply chains to avoid overseas production, aligning with her sustainability values. Elisa has secured over $113,000 in grant funding, partnered with Scion (New Zealand’s Crown Research Institute for forestry), and received multiple national and international recognitions, including Six YES Awards, The King’s Trust Award and NZFOA Blue Sky Award.
She has also delivered presentations to over 10,000 people across 10 conferences and has been featured on TV, radio, podcasts, and in the news.
The future is looking bright and innovative.
